Check out the opening and closing tracks on Chips 'N' Chocolate, a program of lighthearted yet seriously composed works, made to order for the Ensemble Dreiklang Berlin. No less than 14 different recorders of myriad shapes and sizes are employed, and the booklet notes tell you which instruments you're hearing when. A booze flask adds percussive effects to "Fever" (yes, the same song Peggy Lee made famous). Like many classically trained musicians tackling popular idioms, these players have trouble phrasing behind the beat, or making dotted rhythms not sound stiff. On the other hand, they perfectly capture "Kriminal-Tango's" sultry, elastic mood, and nail the bebop flavor of "New Braun Rag" by Pete Rose (no relation to the baseball player). The Dreiklang's own Irmhild Beutler contributes three delightful miniatures alongside Matthias Maute's nifty pastiche "Les Barricades" and Willem Wander van Nieukerk's "Bye bye, blues (C-U, Jesus)". Sefton Cottom's "Dreiklang-Suite" and Sören Sieg's "pina ya phala" are multi-movement centerpieces whose weight and substance provide needed contrast to their surroundings. The recorded sound can't be beat, and the performances are guaranteed to make you smile."
